One bench.
One pair of hands.

Every MXCustoms piece is built start-to-finish by the same person, in a small shop in Laguna Beach. This page is who's behind it — and how the work actually gets done.

The story

It started with weekend builds for friends

MXCustoms began the way most honest shops do: a table for a friend, a set of boards for a wedding, a console that turned out better than the store-bought one it replaced. Word got around. The weekends stopped being enough, and the shop became the job.

Today it's commissions across Orange County — dining tables, live-edge epoxy rivers, desks, boards — still built the same way: one piece at a time, on one bench, in Laguna Beach. There's no production line to speed up and no crew to hand things off to, and that's on purpose. The bottleneck is the quality control.

The promise is simple: you talk to the person building your piece. The maker who quotes your table is the one who picks the slab, cuts the joints, sends the progress photos, and carries it through your front door. Questions get real answers, fast, because there's nobody in between.

How the shop runs

Three things you can hold me to

Straight quotesOne itemized number and a real timeline before the first cut — and the number on delivery day is the number you were quoted.
Built to be usedSolid hardwood, joinery meant to outlast trends, finishes that shrug off daily life. Furniture you live with, not around.
Local & directNo sales layer, no showroom markup. The person who answers the phone is the person at the bench — same-day replies.

The process, up close

Slab selection

Every build starts at the lumber stack — slabs and boards picked by hand for grain, color, and character, then moisture-checked before they earn a spot in the shop.

Milling & flattening

Rough lumber gets flattened, squared, and left to acclimate. Wood moves; good shops let it move first, then flatten again. That patience is why tops stay flat for decades.

Joinery & shaping

Joints are cut to carry weight for a lifetime, dry-fit until they're right, then glued up. Edges, curves, and bases get shaped by hand until the piece looks like it grew that way.

The finish

Sanding through the grits until the surface feels like glass, then a finish chosen for the life the piece will live — coffee, kids, salt air. Cured, inspected, delivered with a care guide.

Visit

Shop visits, by appointment

The best conversations about a commission happen over the actual wood. Come by, run a hand over the slabs, see builds in progress, and talk through your project standing next to pieces at every stage. No showroom polish — just the shop as it works.

Call or email to set a time. Directions come with your appointment confirmation.
